On Wednesday June 17, the nation was rocked and riveted by the news of massacre at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, SC. The thug behind the unthinkable acts was a 5’9 Caucasian male by the name of Dylan Storm Roof. On Thursday Roof was arrested after being on the run in Shelby, North Carolina. Upon his arrest Roof waived extradition, was apprehended without incident and given a bulletproof vest. Soon after many media sources began to lean towards the conclusion that Roof had severe mental issues and was not racist because he had black friends on Facebook.

After these events social media was once again swarmed by the uncomfortable yet formidable topic, white privilege. Many African Americans felt as if this were another act of white privilege because an African American suspect would have been immediately gunned down and would not be given the benefit of being seen as “ mentally insane” but rather as a thug. Was the arrest of Dylan Roof a blatant act of white privilege or was it standard protocol. Our experts weigh in.
In October 2002, John Lee Malvo and Allen Muhammad had successfully committed 17 murders of 17 innocent people. That’s right, 17. The murders were executed with a sniper rifle, which earned Malvo and Mohammed the nickname of the DC snipers. The murders were completely race motivated as Malvo confessed “The Plan” was to kill 3 white people a day in order to inflict terror amongst white America. Upon Malvo’s arrest he was given a bulletproof vest, apprehended without incident, and classified by the media as mentally insane. Malvo was given the same treatment Roof received even though Malvo killed almost twice the amount of people. Still White privilege?
